RUTLAND, Vt - Vermont Electric Power Company (VELCO) has been awarded the Tree Line USA designation for the second year in a row. The National Arbor Day Foundation bestows this award annually to utilities nationwide that demonstrate practices that protect and enhance America’s forests. To be eligible for this award, utilities must fulfill three requirements: Adopt work practices for quality tree care; carry out annual, documented training for employees, contractors and supervisors who perform the utility’s pruning work; and implement a public education program about trees to all homeowner customers.

In 2007, VELCO planted thousands of trees for aesthetic mitigation, property reclamation projects, and wildlife habitat enhancement throughout Vermont. As a major sponsor of Vermont’s Arbor Day activities, VELCO provided 5,000 students with seedlings as part of an educational program. “VELCO is committed to maintaining dependable electrical reliability service while conserving Vermont’s healthy forest system”, stated Jeff Disorda, VELCO Right of Way Supervisor. “Following the key practices outlined by the National Arbor Day Foundation is integral to contributing to healthier and more abundant community forests”. In addition to receiving national recognition from the National Arbor Day Foundation, VELCO was honored at a state ceremony on Vermont Arbor Day, May 2, 2008.
