RUTLAND, Vt. – Vermont Electric Power Company (VELCO) has successfully re-earned the honor to be designated as a “SHARP Company”, only the fourth company in Vermont to receive such an award. SHARP - The Safety Health Achievement Recognition Program, is a nationally recognized program implemented by states under Federal OSHA that recognizes high-hazard businesses with exemplary safety and health programs. The SHARP designation lasts two years and VELCO had first won the award in 2005.
“SHARP is like safety on steroids: it involves all aspects of how you conduct business,” noted Vermont Department of Labor Commissioner Patricia Moulton Powden who announced the award to VELCO at a ceremony to honor company associates on October 24th, “It affects the whole organization and empowers everyone to be part of the safety solution.” The award includes a SHARP flag that Commissioner Moulton Powden presented to VELCO President and CEO John J. Donleavy.
For their especially strong commitment to safety, Donleavy gave the flag to a VELCO Line Crew based out of a company facility located in the Northeast Kingdom in Ferdinand where the flag will be flown. “Every accident can be avoided. Thanks to VELCO associates’ hard work, commitment and culture of caring for each other, we continue to make our operations safer as we perform the critical work to keep Vermont’s lights on.”
VELCO (www.velco.com) is Vermont’s transmission system reliability resource delivering electricity to the consumer utility companies throughout Vermont. VELCO was formed in 1956 as the nation’s first non-discriminatory provider of transmission services.
