Barre, VT – 6 October 2017: Vermont Electric Power Company (VELCO) is inviting neighbors in the Barre area, and other interested people, to an informational session about a proposed project to upgrade the Barre substation. The meeting will be held Wednesday evening, October 11, 2017, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the Barre Town Office, 149 Websterville Road in Websterville, VT. VELCO construction and community outreach staff will explain the proposed project and answer any questions.

The meeting is one of several steps leading up to a formal request for a permit to construct the project from the Vermont Public Utility Commission. The Commission requires that VELCO provide 45 days’ notice, including a detailed project description, to local select boards and other officials. This enables community leaders to review and discuss the project’s impacts with residents, and to provide input before formal proceedings begin before the Commission. VELCO provided the 45-day notice to the Barre Town Select Board, the Barre City Council and the Central Vermont Regional Planning Commission on September 5, 2017.

The Barre Project as proposed would upgrade the protection and control system and construct a larger control building. The project will require a fence expansion and the installation of a temporary substation on land owned by VELCO on the opposite side of Upper Prospect Street.

VELCO plans to formally apply to the Vermont Public Utility Commission for project approval on October 31, 2017. Subject to Commission approval, construction will begin in summer 2018, and be completed in summer 2019.
